How to choose

The short list for the first few weeks, and what to skip until you know your puppy.

Buy now: a light collar and leash, a harness that adjusts as they grow, a bed they can chew without disaster, a slow bowl if they inhale food, and one or two chew toys sized for a small mouth.

Wait: anything sized to the adult dog they will become. A harness bought for a 30 kg Labrador is a hazard on an 8 kg puppy. Expect to replace collars and harnesses two or three times in the first year — that is normal, not waste.

Two things worth getting right early. Measure the chest behind the front legs rather than guessing from breed, and start handling paws and ears in the first fortnight so grooming and nail trims never become a fight.

Everything here lists a size chart in centimeters and inches. If a size is wrong, one photo gets you the right one free, with nothing to ship back.
