Leave it out, open, at home. A carrier that only appears on vet day becomes a vet-day object, and the fight starts before you leave. Feed treats in it for a week and most cats will walk in on their own.
Choosing one: your cat should be able to stand up and turn around. Top-opening carriers are far easier for lowering a reluctant cat in than front-opening ones, which is worth more than any other feature at the vet.
Backpack carriers suit confident cats and short trips. A cat that panics in an enclosed space will panic faster in one on your back where you cannot see them.
Never leave a cat in a carrier in a parked car, and keep the journey as quiet as you can — a towel over the carrier settles most cats more than anything you can buy.
