Using it safely
- Check the blade temperature against your own wrist every few minutes. Clipper blades heat up with use, and a hot blade can burn skin before your dog reacts — this is the most common clipper injury, and it is silent until it is not
- Work in short passes and let the blade rest. Longer sessions mean a hotter blade
- Go with the lie of the coat, not against it, and never force the clipper through a mat — a mat is a groomer's job
- Watch for skin folds, nipples and the tail base, which are easy to catch
- Charge it out of your pet's reach and keep the cable away from chewers
Not the right fit if…
- Your dog has a thick double coat — a compact clipper will bog down and heat up faster. That is a groomer's machine
- You are clipping a matted dog — see a groomer. Clipping over mats catches skin
- You are thinking of shaving a double-coated breed for summer — the undercoat insulates against heat as well as cold, and shaving can make a dog less able to cope, not more. Ask your vet first
